Andrea still thought her idea for a series of articles on Rocky Ford residents who had left for one reason or another and then returned was a good one. But she had no place to start. Shep, having become a doctor during his absence, would have made an interesting initial article, and she was disappointed over his refusal to participate.

But she also understood it. A need for privacy was something she understood very well, and she couldn’t fault Shep for guarding his.

Still, his refusal had put her back to square one as far as a nice series of human-interest articles went. Scratch that idea for the next edition, she told herself, but there was still the editorial to get through. Kathleen hadn’t told her to do the paper’s customary editorials in her absence, but then Kathleen hadn’t been especially specific about anything. And maybe all Kathleen wanted from her was to be on hand should an event occur in the area that required someone with a journalistic background to report.

But Andrea’s experience was so limited. A degree in journalism, good grades and some published articles in the college paper did not a reporter make. She felt she was a good writer, but accurately critiquing one’s own work was impossible. Whatever, she should probably just count herself lucky and stop trying to second-guess Kathleen’s decision to hire her.

What she could not trivialize or overlook, however, was the opportunity Kathleen had handed her. She had to justify Kathleen’s faith in her, which meant, in Andrea’s estimation, at least one good article with her byline in each edition of the paper. Or at least an acceptable editorial.

While she made and ate a light supper, then showered and got into her nightclothes, she racked her brain about that editorial.

That wasn’t altogether true. Entwined with her excitement and worry about her job were thoughts of Shep. His kiss at the door had been sweet; the first one had been wildly passionate. She had enjoyed both.

There was no avoiding her feelings for Shep, however foolish they were. The long and the short of it was that she had fallen in love with him at first sight, and even the emotional pain he’d inflicted on New Year’s Eve hadn’t destroyed that love. It didn’t make her happy, because for all she knew he could still be in love with his ex-wife. His physical attraction for her didn’t mean much in the long run. He was very male and macho, and undoubtedly not accustomed to living a celibate life. If she wasn’t in the picture, depressing as the thought was, another woman would be.

So she dare not make too much of Shep’s attentions. And her decision against the two of them conducting an affair was a wise one. At least she’d done something right in that regard.

Andrea worked until midnight, and although she wasn’t thrilled with the editorial she’d written, it was something to turn in. And maybe it wasn’t so bad for a first effort, she told herself as she wearily crawled into bed.
